Dude

Korinthia got me thinking about A and his skateboarding.  Just like I can't control his passion for reptiles and amphibians which could lead to his exposure to a venomous snake, there is no way I could keep this kid off a skateboard.  Yes, he has broken an ankle and gotten stitches in a very uncomfortable place, but the pluses way outweigh the negative risks.  In addition to making him happy, it has taught him about hard work and it's actually really good for fitness (his abs are ripped). I do love that he plays soccer, but to be honest it just isn't his passion.

He's my skateboarding herpetologist.  And, dude, he totally rocks.

  1. Eee! I don't think my heart could take it if my kids were into something like that. That's amazing stuff! (Scares me to pieces, though.) Thanks for sharing the video. He'd put the skateboarders on our corner to shame.

  2. Kory, it's taken me years to get used to it, but he's pretty good at falling without getting hurt. It's hard to not support him when it's something he loves so much. He's been skating for about 7 years, so it's been a slow progression of improvement and raising the bar in difficulty. Thanks! I think he's pretty amazing too :)

  4. Parenting is hard, especially when all we want to do is wrap our kids in cotton wool and keep them from any and all harm.

Life is not like that. They need to learn to fall, to get up and do it all over again. They need to learn that often, falling doesn't lead to severe injury (although, as you mentioned, sometimes it does, but most of the time we recover) and it's our job as parents to let them explore that, no matter how many heart attacks it gives us to watch them put themselves in those situations.

A totally rocks (amazing!) and so do you for supporting him throughout his growth and development as a skater. :o)
